Debunking Common Skincare Myths

Debunking Common Skincare Myths

Because your glow deserves facts, not fluff.

Let’s face it — skincare is a billion-dollar industry wrapped in fancy packaging, influencer opinions, and way too many half-truths.

Between TikTok hacks, magazine headlines, and that one friend who swears by rubbing lemon on her face (please don’t), it’s no wonder people are confused about what really works.

It’s time to set the record straight.

As a holistic skincare artisan with over 30 years in the beauty industry — and 40+ years of eczema-prone, autoimmune-sensitized skin — I’ve heard it all. So today, we’re busting the most common skincare myths and giving you the real tea (herbal, of course). 🍵

💥 Myth #1: “If it burns or tingles, it means it’s working.”

Truth: No, it means it’s irritating your skin.
That burning sensation? It’s often your skin’s way of yelling “SOS!” Unless it's a medically prescribed treatment (and even then, proceed with caution), skincare should not sting. Especially if you have sensitive or eczema-prone skin.

🔥 Let your skincare soothe, not punish.

💧 Myth #2: “Oily skin doesn’t need moisturizer.”

Truth: Skipping moisturizer actually makes oily skin worse.
When you deprive your skin of hydration, it overcompensates by producing more oil. The key is to use a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer that balances and protects.

🌿 Even oily skin needs water — just not heavy creams.

🧽 Myth #3: “You need to scrub to get clean.”

Truth: Harsh scrubs can damage your skin barrier.
Physical exfoliants (like apricot kernels or walnut shells) can cause microtears in the skin, especially on delicate or inflamed areas. Gentle enzymatic or herbal exfoliants are much safer — and smarter.

💛 Kindness is cleansing, not aggression.

🌞 Myth #4: “You only need sunscreen when it’s sunny.”

Truth: UV rays don’t care about clouds.
Up to 80% of UV rays can pass through overcast skies — and they’re still aging and damaging your skin while you sip your latte in the fog. Daily SPF is non-negotiable, rain or shine.

☁️ Your future face will thank you.

🧼 Myth #5: “If your skin feels tight after cleansing, it’s clean.”

Truth: Tight skin = stripped skin.
That squeaky-clean feeling means your cleanser may be removing your natural oils and damaging your barrier — which leads to irritation, flaking, and inflammation.

🫧 Clean doesn’t mean dehydrated.

🧴 Myth #6: “Natural means safe.”

Truth: Not always. Poison ivy is natural too.
Just because a product is labeled “natural” doesn’t mean it’s automatically gentle or effective. Some essential oils, citrus extracts, and botanicals can irritate sensitive skin. Always patch test and look for transparency.

💡 The real secret is formulation, not just ingredients.

🧪 Myth #7: “The more products, the better.”

Truth: More doesn’t mean more effective — it can mean more irritation.
Skinimalism is in for a reason. Overloading your routine can confuse or stress your skin. Stick to a core set of essentials: cleanse, hydrate, treat (if needed), and protect.

🌿 Simple. Consistent. Smart.

🌸 Myth #8: “You can shrink your pores.”

Truth: Pores aren’t doors — you can’t open or close them.
You can minimize their appearance by keeping them clean, exfoliated, and supported with non-comedogenic products, but you can’t shrink them. And that’s okay. Pores are functional and beautiful.

✨ Normalize textured skin — it’s human.
